Ten of Sticks” is a three-day festival concluding the second season of o-o-o
presented over a weekend, it includes three performances staged within Nimrod
Alexander Gershoni’s video and sound installation Synthetic Passage. Exploring video
and audio synthesis and feedback, but also their employment in live settings, the work
appropriates the elements of a television control room and a sound stage that are
constantly monitored by closed-circuit television cameras.
Video and audio synthesis and video and audio feedback are techniques that involve
manipulating electronic signals to create new and unique imagery and sound. Feedback
involves creating a loop of images projected onto themselves, which are then
manipulated in real-time. When used together, these techniques create a wide range of
effects, from abstract and psychedelic patterns, to more realistic and recognizable
images, subverting assumptions relating to mainstream media, how we perceive it, and
the reality which it presents. These techniques can also challenge our perceptions of
reality and how it is mediated by broadcast media and social platforms. While broadcast
media is often seen as a representation of reality, video synthesis and feedback create
self-generated and often psychedelic visuals that could be removed from reality. In
parallel to these techniques, the action of monitoring and duplicating a situation in real-
time creates an unusual and uncanny experience; it also comes with a degree of
voyeurism, considering that such action allows to watch performances through a TV.
Synthetic Passage can be set both as a self-generated installation piece or be
operated by a performer, creating an ongoing and evolving live video and audio
performance. Within this environment, Gershoni – under his alter-egos Benny Ekstra
(sound artist and designer) and Benny’s Video (amateur VJ and Podcaster) – has
orchestrated three sessions: the first session with Leila Rose Bari; the second session
with Dr. Guy Dubious; and the third session with Sharon Kantor, Ariel Kleiner and Or
Rimer.
“Ten of Sticks” is the closing event of the second season of “o-o-o.” Led by artist and
CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo Office Manager Guy Bernard Reichmann, alongside artists and
Content Managers Mona Benyamin and Esraa Abed, “out-of-office” is a series of events
to be presented in the Marc Schimmel Multipurpose Gallery. Focused on time-based
practices such as video, dance, and performance, and in line with the multidisciplinary
mission of the Center, “o-o-o” was conceived as a way to nurture the domestic scene.
Admission: one show 50₪ / two shows 80₪ / three shows 100₪

The performance by Merkava – an electro-folk-noise-storytelling duo by Leila Rose
(vocal and texts) and Nimrod Alexander Gershoni (audiovisual synthesis) – is the first
session of “Ten of Sticks,” the closing event of the second season of “o-o-o.” The
ensemble has been active for the past year and formulates a musical language with the
intention of taking the listener on a surreal and expressive sonorous journey without a
linear narrative. In this show, the duo appears alongside Gershoni’s installation
“Synthetic Passage” and collaborates through the audiovisual practice of this work.

Performance | out-of-office: Dr. Guy Dubious and Nimrod Alexander Gershoni

This new and collaborative piece sees Gershoni recording and producing tapes for
Dubious who is then transmitting them through Pera Tape – a system of tapes he
designed and created. In doing so, Gershoni is also monitoring and synthesizing the
actions of Dubious, who is then transmitting the information to the audience through the

TVs part of Gershoni’s installation Synthetic Passage, which functions as a set. This
piece is the second session of “Ten of Sticks,” the closing event of the second season
of “o-o-o.”

This show consists of a live composition by a trio of electric guitarists – Sharon Kantor,
Ariel Kleiner, Or Rimer – based in the tradition of noise rock and yet embarking on an
exploration through the world of sound. The show is defined by its creators as an
“organic pursuit of manufacturers or imagined melodies within the frequencies produced
by playing at a certain volume, in unconventional directions, reverberating in space with
methods of imitation and replication.” On this occasion, the trio performs within
Gershoni’s Synthetic Passage, an installation featuring closed-circuit television that
produce an audio-visual feedback. The viewers move between the experience of the
live show and its “disassembly and reunification” in real-time broadcasted on the
screens.
